James Baskett was an American actor best known for his portrayal of Uncle Remus in the Disney film Song of the South (1946). He was the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award, which he received an Honorary Academy Award for his performance. Baskett was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 16, 1904. He began his career as a vaudeville performer, and later appeared in several films, including The Green Pastures (1936) and Cabin in the Sky (1943). Baskett was married to actress Hattie McDaniel from 1945 until his death in 1948. He died of heart failure at the age of 44. Baskett's net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be around $500,000.
