He has also directed and choreographed for television, film, and regional theater. Calhoun was born in LaGrange, Georgia, and grew up in nearby Columbus. He attended the University of Georgia, where he studied theater and dance. After college, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater. Calhoun's Broadway directing and choreography credits include Newsies, Grease, Brooklyn, and Big River. He has also directed and choreographed for television, including the musicals Annie, Cinderella, and High School Musical. Calhoun has been nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Musical for Newsies and Best Choreography for Grease. He has also been nominated for Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Calhoun is married to actress and singer Susan Egan. They have two children.
