NC Wyeth

Newell Convers Wyeth, known as N. C. Wyeth, is an American artist and illustrator. He was a pupil of artist Howard Pyle and went on to become one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books - 25 of them for Scribner, the Scribner Classics, for which he is best known. The first of these, Treasure Island, was one of his masterpieces and the proceeds went to his workshop. Wyeth was a realist painter at a time when cameras and photography were starting to rival his profession. Sometimes seen as rhetoric, his illustrations are designed to be quickly understood. Wyeth, who is both an artist and illustrator, understood this difference well and said in 1908: "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed - you cannot mix." He is the father of Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of Jamie Wyeth, both famous American painters.
