Philo Taylor Farnsworth is an American inventor and television pioneer. He made many important contributions to the early development of electronic television. He is best known for his invention in 1927 of the first complete electronic image acquisition device, the image detector, as well as the first complete and fully functional electronic television system. Farnsworth developed a complete television system with receivers and cameras - commercially produced by the Farnsworth Television and Broadcasting Company from 1938 to 1951, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Later, Farnsworth invented a small nuclear fusion device, the Farnsworth - Hirsch fusor, which uses electrostatic inertial confinement. It is not an actual device for generating nuclear energy, although it does provide a viable source of neutrons. The design of this device has inspired other fusion approaches, including the Polywell reactor concept.
