Alan Hale Jr. is an American actor and restaurateur. He is the son of actor character Alan Hale Sr. His television career spanned four decades, but he is best known for his leading role as Captain Jonas Grumby in the 1960s series Gilligan's Island. He is also appeared on several talk and variety shows. Hale has appeared in over 200 films and television roles since 1941. He appeared mainly in the West, starring alongside Kirk Douglas in The Big Trees, Audie Murphy in Destry, Ray Milland in A Man Alone, Robert Wagner in The True Story of Jesse James and Hugh Marlowe in The Long Rope. He has also appeared in musicals alongside Don DeFore in It Happened on Fifth Avenue, James Cagney in The West Point Story, and Judy Canova in Honeychile. He went on to gain success in the CBS comedy Gilligan's Island, starring as the captain's supporting lead. Hale has reprized the role of Skipper in three Gilligan's Island television series and two animated supporting series.
