Sara Elena Ramírez is a Mexican-American actress, singer, songwriter and activist. Born in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Ramírez moved to the United States at the age of 8, eventually earning a fine arts degree at the Juilliard School. Ramírez began acting in Broadway productions, making his debut in Paul Simon's The Capeman, then venturing into film and television roles. Ramirez's breakthrough came with her portrayal of the original Lady of the Lake in the Broadway musical Spamalot in 2005, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Ramírez was asked to pick his own prime-time TV show from a series of ABC lineups, choosing Grey's Anatomy. They portrayed Dr. Callie Torres, the most enduring LGBT character in American television history, appearing in 11 seasons and 239 episodes. Ramirez's volunteering to add bisexuality to the character also marks one of the first regular gay roles on prime-time television.

She starred in You've Got Mail and was best known for her role as Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy. For her role as The Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, she won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
