Mike Newell is a British film director and producer. He is best known for directing the 1994 romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral, the 1997 fantasy drama Donnie Brasco, and the 2005 romantic drama, The Constant Gardener. Newell was born in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, and attended the University of Cambridge. He began his career in television, directing episodes of the BBC series The Wednesday Play and Play for Today. He made his feature film debut in 1983 with the British drama, The Awakening. Newell has been nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Director for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Best Adapted Screenplay for Donnie Brasco. He has also been nominated for two BAFTA Awards, for Best Director for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Best Film for Donnie Brasco. Newell is currently 79 years old.
