Jim Montgomery is a former American swimmer who won three gold medals at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He was born on January 24, 1955 in Madison, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of the Longhorns swim team. Montgomery is best known for his performance in the 1976 Summer Olympics, where he won three gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter freestyle relay, and 4x200-meter freestyle relay. He also won a silver medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay. Montgomery is currently the head coach of the University of Denver men's ice hockey team. He has also served as the head coach of the U.S. National Team and the U.S. Olympic Team. Montgomery is married to his wife, Mary, and they have two children. He is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his family. He is also an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He also is the founder of the Dallas Aquatic Masters club team and in 2002 was named U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) Coach of the Year.
He coached varsity swimming at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas from 1999 to 2016. He resigned in 2016 to launch the Jim Montgomery Swim School.
He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1986 as an Honor Swimmer.
He founded the Dallas Masters swim program in 1981 and later renamed it the Lone Star Masters. In 1990, the name officially became Baylor/Lone Star Masters. He began teaching swim lessons in 2007, including a class to help adults get past their fear of water.
Montgomery won five gold medals in freestyle events at the first World Championships in 1973. From Yugoslavia, Montgomery went to Indiana University, swam for Doc Counsilman for four years, with the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games taking place between his junior and senior years.
