Bobby Charles is an American singer-songwriter and musician. He is best known for writing the hit songs "See You Later Alligator" and "Walking to New Orleans". He has also written songs for artists such as Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, and The Band. Charles was born in Abbeville, Louisiana, and grew up in nearby Lafayette. He began playing guitar at the age of nine and wrote his first song at the age of twelve. He was influenced by the music of Hank Williams, Lead Belly, and Lightnin' Hopkins. In 1955, Charles moved to New Orleans and began performing in local clubs. He was soon signed to Chess Records and released his first single, "Later Alligator", in 1956. The song became a hit and was later covered by Bill Haley & His Comets. Charles continued to write and record music throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He wrote songs for Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, and The Band, among others. He also released several solo albums, including Bobby Charles (1972) and Last Train to Memphis (1975). Charles has been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He continues to perform and record music today.
