Sarah Maestas Barnes is an American lawyer and politician who currently serves as the New Mexico Secretary of State. She was born on May 14, 1980 in Albuquerque, NM. Barnes graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law. She was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 2006. Barnes began her career as a law clerk for the New Mexico Supreme Court. She then worked as a staff attorney for the New Mexico Court of Appeals. In 2011, she was appointed as the Deputy Secretary of State for the State of New Mexico. In 2015, she was appointed as the Secretary of State for the State of New Mexico. Barnes is married to her husband, Michael Barnes, and they have two children. Barnes is an active member of the community and has served on the boards of the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, the New Mexico Women’s Bar Association, and the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association. She is also a member of the American Bar Association, the New Mexico Bar Association, and the National Association of Secretaries of State.
