Michael A. Martone is an American writer and professor of English at the University of Alabama. He was born in 1955 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He received his B.A. from Indiana University in 1977 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1979 and 1983, respectively. Martone is the author of several books, including The Flatness and Other Landscapes (1986), Racing in Place: Collages, Fragments, Postcards, Ruins (1995), Fort Wayne Is Seventh on Hitler's List (2000), and Double-Wide: Collected Fiction (2005). He has also edited several anthologies, including The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction (2002) and The Norton Anthology of Postmodern American Fiction (2003). Martone has received numerous awards and honors, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction (1987), a Pushcart Prize (1988), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2002).
